ARTECHOUSE DC presents Transient: Impermanent Paintings, by Italian multimedia artist Quayola for the first time in the U.S. with an immersive exhibition featuring a duet of motorized piano and hyperreal video projections. The latest at ARTECHOUSE DC, this new exhibition premieres January 17, 2022 and will be on view through March 6, 2022. Jump to our Ticket Giveaway below.
Transient: Impermanent Paintings marks the beginning of a new sound and visual collaboration between Quayola and musician SETA. The exhibition also continues Quayola’s studio research on traditional artistic techniques in the context of human-machine relationship, which evolved into an intimate collaboration of classical music and painting.

The piece was originally created as an audiovisual concert for two motorized pianos by Quayola, but was adapted for one Yamaha Disklavier DC7X ENSPIRE PRO for this presentation, in partnership with Yamaha.
“What is unique about this exhibition is the exploration of synergy between sound and image,” says Sandro, ARTECHOUSE Founder & Chief Creative Officer. “Quayola presents this as performance art, but at ARTECHOUSE we have transformed it into an exhibition where the performance continues to exist and engage with the visitor even after the artist has left. We believe this is an important step towards a new way to experience a live music performance.”
The main installation will be complimented by three additional installations: one on the technical and creative process that went into creating the original improvisational live performance; a second where visitors are invited to explore a multi-screen audiovisual installation with automated motorized controllers; and a third piece includes an immersive video projection and unique prints of visuals from different previous iterations of the main installation. The result is an immersive artistic journey for all ages.
“This exhibition aims to blur the boundaries between image and sound, presenting a series of immersive audiovisual installations along with motorized pianos,,” says Quayola. “Transient does not generate finite music and paintings, rather it presents the impermanence that lies behind its algorithmic potential.”
Transient: Impermanent Paintings opens January 17 and runs through March 6, 2022, with special pricing for previews January 14 through 16. ARTECHOUSE DC is open 10am-10pm daily with sessions every 30 minutes.
visiting Transient: Impermanent Paintings
Thank you ARTECHOUSE DC for hosting us this week. Wevisited Transient: Impermanent Paintings with our 3 elementary aged children. We love that ARTECHOUSE DC can be a part of our homeschool curriculum. This exhibition is an illustration of STEAM in practice, a synergy of audio and visual arts, and a fun opportunity for art appreciation.
The pianos appear to play themselves as the art appears on the walls and floors all around you in synch with the music. Our children enjoyed watching the code change as the ’ghost’ piano played. We talked about the technology that makes it possible.
We sat in awe as the impermanent paintings morphed and changed all around us. We skipped, twirled and danced along to the music and in synch with the brush strokes.
We spent an hour immersed in art and had a lovely chat about the exhibit on the drive home as they shared how it was ‘weird & cool that the paintings made sounds and the music moved’. They noticed the synergy between sound and image that was the basis for the exhibit.
We hope you’ll get an opportunity to experience Transient as well! If you visit the exhibit we would love to see your adventures. Tag @theadvfam so we can follow along.
