The Washington Ballet’s annual contemporary choreography series, NEXTsteps, returns to open the 2022–2023 subscription season with six performances, October 12–16 at Sidney Harman Hall. The program features new works from emerging and acclaimed choreographers Silas Farley, Dana Genshaft and TWB’s own Andile Ndlovu.

This ballet is great for families. If you have ever thought your kids wouldn’t like the ballet, this is the performance to change your mind. The program consists of three separate works by three different choreographers. In essence it’s a compilation of three mini-ballets: All the Little Boxes by Dana Genshaft, Dowland Dances by Silas Farley and re:member by Andile Ndlovu.

There are distinct choices in music, costume, choreography and set that showcase the variety that is the modern ballet. I loved the performance and my kids agreed that this was a very modern and fun ballet performance that is perfect for kids.

Each of the mini-ballets is followed by an intermission so there is plenty of opportunities for bathrooms, water, and even a snack. Let’s be real, a little treat at the ballet is part of the fun!
I had a girls night out to see NEXTsteps with my three daughters. They were so excited to dress up fancy, stay up late and enjoy the ballet together. We are building core memories with each special outing.
My kids are currently six, eight and nine years old. This is not their first ballet, so when I say you can enjoy the ballet with your kids, I’m speaking from experience.
