about artechouse dc
ARTECHOUSE is the nation’s first innovative digital art destination with locations in Washington, DC, New York City and Miami Beach. ARTECHOUSE DC presents its fourth annual cherry blossom inspired installation with a conservation twist — Renewal 2121. Seeking to inspire optimism and hope amid a global pandemic and concerns of climate change, the immersive, technology-driven art installation will transport visitors 100 years into the future.
This original ARTECHOUSE production utilizes the power of creative technology to transport visitors into an imagined future 100 years from now where nature’s resilience takes center stage amongst an overdeveloped metropolis, empowering visitors to interact to help the blooms of our future continue to renew.
Open to all ages, Renewal 2121 is on view through September 6, 2021 at ARTECHOUSE DC (1238 Maryland Avenue, SW). ARTECHOUSE is located between the Smithsonian and L’Enfant Plaza Metro stations in close proximity to the Mandarin Oriental hotel, the Wharf, and the National Mall.

artechouse dc renew 2121 review
ARTECHOUSE DC hosted us for a chance to see this amazing exhibit in person this week. We felt very comfortable with the timed entries, mask requirements and social distancing protocols per the DC covid guidelines. We thought the Renewal 2121 exhibit was the most interactive and hands-on, especially for kids.
June Family Days at ARTECHOUSE DC adds a family-friendly activity guide that is perfect for connecting what you see and experience at the installation with the power of our own impact. Having attended other installations at ARTECHOUSE DC with kids in the past, we appreciated how the guide enriches the experience with kids. Like with many art installations, experiencing with our kids reduces the amount of time we can spend reading and interpreting the art to share with our kids. The activity guide does that for you.

The main gallery transported us to six different interactive scenes of the ever-evolving futuristic fictitious metropolis. Each scene offered a new way to interact and observe the narrative of the history from a small fishing village to the populous megacity.

The Sleepless Alley installation also offered assorted interactions through the narrow street lined with storefronts, signs and lights. These interactive displays were created using 80% repurposed or recycled materials. Each component highlights the reality of future life in the fictitious metropolis from the extinction of species to the use or robots and automation.

The sleepless alley was unlike any other installation by ARTECHOUSE we have ever seen. We all enjoyed the games and interactivity of it for far longer than the recommended 15 minutes of immersion time.

The ARTECHOUSE app brings the immersive experience to a new level in this installation. The activating marker activates hidden art that appears and changes. This augmented reality allowed us to see a tree grow and blossom that was so large we found ourselves lost under its branches.

We took a walk through the printed Dragon76 mural to experience a future where artificial intelligence and biomechanics enhancements are integrated into everyday life taking the form of the familiar as well as very futuristic.

The Backend installation may be on the way out, but it is definitely worth a stop. We played with the mind of a machine that is always watching and powering the city. This installation is also made of 80% repurposed or recycled materials and reminds us to keep the balance between technology and nature in our own lives. The kids loved being able to see themselves on the screens and were entertained for much longer than the suggested 5 minutes of immersion.

The kids declared this the best ARTECHOUSE installation to date and we agree! Renewal 2121 would make a fun summer family excursion or an educational field trip. Please tag us in your pictures @theadvfam if you visit, we can’t wait to hear what you all think!

The installation’s inspiration also celebrates three themes of renewal — the city, nature, and ourselves. Renewal 2121 aims to inspire people to harness their energy towards finding solutions that will ensure a brighter future. We are so excited to partner with our friends at ARTECHOUSE to share this unique immersive experience with you!
